Why do we use podcast transcripts?

The first reason is for accessibility. Transcripts makes your content accessible for the hearing impaired.

You want all of your amazing content that's in your episodes to reach everyone, and you don't want to exclude people who aren't able to listen to your audio.

Number two is that it has the potential to to improve your SEO. Using transcripts can be a really great way to make your show notes longer, therefore improving your SEO because we know that if if your show notes are super, super short, that's not really going to help too much with your searchability online. More on that later!

A third reason to use transcripts is that it can save you so much time! There are so many ways that you can use transcripts to save you time when you go to repurpose all of that content from your podcast episodes.

So to recap, the top reasons for using podcast transcripts are accessibility, SEO, and it saves you time.

How can you use podcast transcripts?

Now that you know why podcast transcripts are so important, let’s look at how you can use them to make your life easier as a podcaster.

Show Notes

Each podcast episode should have it’s own show notes page on your website’s blog. Some show notes are recap style, and others are long-form blog post style.

After recording, you put your audio through a software like Otter.ai, which will transcribe your episode for you. Then you’ll skim through the transcript and clean it up because it won’t be 100% accurate.

Once you have that transcript, you can do a few different things with it.

  1. You can skim through the transcript and pull information from it to write your recap style show notes. This may include a 2-3 paragraph summary, bullet points with main takeaways, and resources from the episode. You can then embed the entire transcript on the page as well.

  2. Another option is to take the entire podcast transcript and format it into more of a traditional long-form style blog post (similar to this one!). Be sure to break up your text into small digestible sections and use headers.

Use the search feature

You can search your transcript like you would on a Google document. I like to use this to search “show notes” in the transcript to be sure that I’ve included any links in my show notes that I promised from the episode.

Pull quotes

I especially love doing this for guest episodes. I always like to include a quote from my guests on my on Instagram when I promote the episode.

So, you can go through, pull out any impactful quotes from the episode, and then use that to turn into a post for Instagram or a post for Facebook.

Give transcripts a try!

I hope this episode gave you some ideas on how you can use podcast transcripts to save you time as a podcaster. Let me know if you try any of these ideas out!
